
Today is Labour Day and i will not talk about it because we all know it, i will talk about something local, a pagan tradition.
Tonight we put one branch of "maias" or "giestas" (i can't translate it to english, need help!) in windows and doors like in the picture. Over the centuries there were differents explanations but always floating basically in the fact of spring arrived and the fields are full of this natural yellow blanket so it was a way to celebrate spring and everything related like fertility, the other reason, the actual one, is that the devil is walking around tonight and this is ours most effective defense to avoid the beast from entering in our house.
Tonight we can say the houses in north of Portugal are full of brunches of this beautyful yellow wild flower sending a strong message to devil:
-Stay out, your not welcome!


and this was the case because i assume before living here i didn't know how intense and great is to live on this historical city with a 1,000-year history.
Meanwhile I have married, have a lovely daughter and settled downtown with no plans to move out. Since i'm not native my interest by Porto history has been always present from the 1st day i move, now is even more interesting because of this blog i pay more attention with some details that are now converted to big issues.
